Baba was born in Hinganghat located in Wardha District of Maharashtra in a wealthy family of Brahmin jagirdars. He was called as baba not because it was conferred upon him but since it was a nickname given to him by his parents. Trained in law, he had a lucrative practice at Wardha. It was then that he got involved in Indian freedom struggle and started acting as a defence lawyer for leaders imprisoned in the 1942 Quit India movement.

Anandwan was the first of the three ashrams started by Baba Amte to treat and rehabilitate leprosy victims from the disadvantaged sections of society. Baba Amte also founded the Somnath and Ashokvan ashrams for treating leprosy patients. Anandwan in Maharashtra is recognised and respected around the world. In 1990, Baba Amte left Anandwan to live along the Narmada river and to join Medha Patkar‘s Narmada Bachao Andolan.

Baba Amte had not been keeping well for several years in his later life. He was compelled to lie down on a bed for much of the time due to a severe spondylosis condition. In 2007, he was diagnosed with leukemia. Baba Amte died in Anandwan on February 9, 2008 at 4.15 am. As per his last wish, he was buried and not cremated. Upon his death, the 14th Dalai Lama, among others, expressed his condolences saying, “His demise is a great loss to all of us”.

Baba Amte won numerous awards during his life, most notably the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Public Service in 1985. International awards. Some of his other awards include Damien-Dutton Award, United Nations Human Rights Prize, International Giraffe Award, The Right Livelihood Award, Padma Shree-1971, Padma Vibhushan-1986, Welfare of the Disabled Award-1986, Gandhi Peace Prize-1999.

In 1987, Kusumagraj was presented with the Jnanpith Award –a prestigious literary award in India– in recognition of his literary achievements, and in particular his writing of the play, Natasamrat. (In 1974, he had received Sahitya Academy Award for “Natasamrat”) He received Ram Ganesh Gadkari Award of All India Natya Parishad in 1985. Pune University conferred on him the honorary degree of D.Lit. in 1986. In 1988, he received Sangeet Nātya Lekhan Award. Indian Govt had decided to confer Padmabhushan to him in late 1980s, but he rejected the offer, saying that he had already received the highest award, Jnan Peeth, in his field, and there was no point in overcrowding the list of Padmabhushan awardees.

Rahul did his schooling from St. Jospeh’s Boys High School, Bangalore and graduated from St. Joseph’s College of Commerce. Dravid started playing cricket at an early age of 12. He played for the state in under-15, under-17 and under-19 cricket tournaments. Soon Dravid played the County cricket for Scotland and Kent. At that time his coach was Keki Tarapore, an Indian cricketer who played in one test match in 1948. In 1991 Dravid also led Karnataka to the Ranji Trophy and made a double century in the final match. In 1996 Rahul got an opportunity to play international cricket. He made his test debut against England at Lords in the 2nd Test match of India’s tour of England. In the same year Dravid’s ODI test debut was against Sri Lanka at Singapore in the Singer Cup tournament. Rahul was one amongst he Wisden cricketers of the year 2000.

In the world of cricket Rahul is known for his consistent batting and active leadership. He is one of the best defensive batsman India could ever produce. This defensive style of playing fetched him the nickname of ‘The Wall’. He is blessed with immense skill to rotate the strike and play with front foot defence, neither scoring runs nor getting out. Rahul’s brilliant strategy of playing cricket has enabled him to create some outstanding records in the cricket world. Dravid has scored 23 centuries in Test cricket at an average of 57.65 which included 5 double centuries while in one-dayers he has an average of 40.16 at a strike rate of 70. He has played a total of 104 test matches and 291 ODIs and the runs scored are 9049 and 9510 respectively. Dravid is also the world record holder for the highest percentage of runs in the matches won under a single captain, where the captain himself has won more than 20 tests. Under the captainship of Bengali boy Saurav Ganguly, Indian team played 21 matches out of which Rahul Dravid played in every single wins and scored a record average of 102.84 and made 2571 runs, with nine hundreds- three of them double-centuries- and ten fifties in 32 innings. Dravid made a great contribution of 23% of the total runs scored by India in those 21 matches. It is only due his superb and consistent performance that Dravid was first made the vice-captain and then the captain of Indian team. Apart from batting Rahul has also done wicket keeping in many matches. His innocent face and distinct attitude has made him the heartthrob of females all over the world.

Sonali, meaning beautiful was born in the Marathi-speaking Kulkarni family in Pune, Maharashtra, India in 1974 on 3rd November. Her father is an engineer, and she has two brothers, Sandeep and Sandesh. Even when she was of a very young age her passion was acting, and she got a chance to exhibit her talents during the Ganesh Mahotsav. She was enrolled in the Abhinav Vidhyalaya in Pune, and after completing schooling was enrolled in Fergusson College, where she majored in Political Science and got a scholarship in Marathi literature. She speaks Hindi, Marathi and English fluently, and has also picked-up Gujarati, Italian, and Tamil. After attending a workshop by Satyadev Dubey, Sonali and Sandesh formed a theater group called Samanvay.

She first made her appearance on the tinsel screen in a Kannada movie titled ‘Cheluvi’, and thereafter has appeared in a total of 32 movies, including one in Italian titled ‘Fuoco Si Di Me’ for which she won an award in the 2006 Milan International Film Festival. Apart from acting, she is also an editor with ‘Viva’, a supplement of ‘Loksatta’, and pens a weekly column called ‘So Kool’. April 12, 2006: Actress Sonali Kulkarni has won the best actress award at the Milan Film Festival for her performance in Italian film Fuoco Su Di Me (My Heart Is On Fire).

He began his career with Kirloskar Sangeet Mandali in 1905. Narayanrao Bal Gandharva acted in numerous classic Marathi plays and was one of those who were responsible for making Sangeet-Natak and Natya-Sangeet popular among common masses. He was a disciple of Bhaskarbuwa Bakhale. Bakhale scored music for his drama Swayamwar. Govindrao Tembe scored music for Maan-apman. Among the younger lot, Bal Gandharva’s composer of choice was Master Krishnarao (Krishna Phulambrikar). His famous contemporaries include Keshavrao Bhosle and Dinanath Mangeshkar. His famous roles include Bhamini in Manapman(1911), Rukmini in Swayamwar(1916) and Sindhu in Ekach Pyala(1919). Bal Gandharv passed away in 1967. The Bal Gandharva Rangamandir (Bal Gandharva Auditorium) in the city of Pune is named in his honour.

The protest against the Simon Commission in October 1928 saw the British police lathi-charge the protestors, severely injuring veteran leader Lala Lajpat Rai. Owing to the excessive beating, Lala succumbed to his injuries, which thus instilled revenge in the hearts of the revolutionaries. Thus, on 18th December, 1928 in Ferozepur, Lahore, a planned retaliation was enforced that led to the assassination of Deputy Superintendent of Police, J.P. Saunders. Shivaram Rajguru along with Sukhdev Thapar were accomplices of the legendary Bhagat Singh who spearheaded the attack.

On 23rd March, 1931, the three brave revolutionaries were hanged, whilst their bodies were cremated on the banks of the River Sutlej. Shivaram Rajguru was only 23 years old when he became a martyr for his country, however, he will always be remembered in the pages of Indian history for his valor and dedication of his life towards India‘s independence.

देशस्थ कसा ओळखावा?

देब्रां गोरेपान ही असतात, आणि सावळेही! तरीही सामान्यत:निमगोरा गव्हाळ वर्ण, व स्पष्ट खणखणीत आवाज (नाकातून न बोलणारे),शुधद मराठी भाषा, प्रेमळ आणि उदार स्वभाव, ही त्यांना ओळखण्याचे काही मुख्य निकष. आता शतकानूशतके देशावरच्या रणरणत्या उनात राहिल्याने काहीच्या रंगरुपात थोडा फरक पडला आहे, त्यामुळे सावळे वर्णाचे लोकही देशस्थात सापडतील पण त्यांची संख्या एकुण लोकांच्या १०- २० % असेल. मराठी बोलण्याचा accent कोणताही असू शकतो मऱाठवाड्याचा, पुणेरी, वऱ्हाडी, सातारी, खानदेशी,मुंबईचाही असू शकतो. शिक्षणावर लहान पासून दिलेला भर व सामान्यातः आर्थिक मध्यमवर्गातील असल्याने शैक्षणीक बाबतीत पुढारलेले असतात. बऱ्याचदा आडनावंही typical नसतात, त्यामुळे एखाद्या देशस्थालाही दुसरा देशस्थ ओळखणं कठीण जातं! जवळजवळ सर्व जातींची आडनावे देशसथांत आहेत असे म्हणणे बरोबर ठरेल- कारण देशमुख,चौधरी,आंबेडकर,बुटाला,भंडारी,गडकरी, डांगे ,देव,दांडेकर,केळकर, म्हाञे ही आडनावे एकली की ती देशस्थांची नाहीत असेच वाटते, पण अशी खास ईतर जाती/ पोटजातीचे वैशिष्ट असलेली आडनावे देशस्थांत आहेत. ‘कर‘ पासून शेवट होणारीही आडनावे देशस्थांत मोठ्या प्रमाणात आहेत.

माणसे जोडणे हे देशसथाचे वैशिषट आहे.२ अपरीचित देशसथ भेटले की लांबुन का होईना आपलयात काही नाते निघते का, असे बघतातच.काहींना हा उगाचच असतावयसतपणा वाटतो,पण गरज असतानाच नाते वा अोळख शोधायची आणि एरवी माञ तुसडेपणाने वागायचे हे कसले नियोजन?अथा॔त इतर पोटजातीतील वा इतर जातीतील ही लोक अशी माणसे जोडत असतील पण देशसथांमधये ही वृतती जासत सापडते हा मुददा पटावा महणुन थोडे सविसतरपणे लिहतो, मराठा तितुका मिळवावा,महाराषटधम॔ वाढवावा‘ इतके सांगुन रामदास सवामी थांबले नाहीत,तर मारती मंदीराचया वयामशाळा,बलोपासना यासाठी महाराषटभर जी चळवळ उभारली तयांला तोड नाही,अौरंगजेबांचया आक॒मणाची कलपना देताना वापरलेले शोलक हे अशयाच संघटनास प॒वॄतत करतात, ‘आहे तितुके जतन करावे, पुढे आणिक मिळवावे, महाराषट राजय करावे चोहीकडे‘. अनेक पंथात,जातीत विभागलेलया हिंदुचे संघटन ही कलपना अशयाच संघटनास प॒वॄतत करतात, ‘आहे तितुके जतन करावे, पुढे आणिक मिळवावे, महाराषट राजय करावे चोहीकडे‘. अनेक पंथात,जातीत विभागलेलया हिंदुचे संघटन ही कलपनाही एका देशसथ वयकतीचीच!, तयांच डॅा केशव हेडगेवार यांनी राषटीय सवं. संघासारखी शिसतबधद संघटना उभारली. याउलट आमचे आडनाव एकारांती असलयाने आमचयात काटकसर,नियोजन,Looks असे गुण बिगर एकारांती आडनावांचया लोकंचया तुलनेत दुपपट आहेत असे मुख॔पणाचे विधान देशसथ कधीच करणार नाहीत. जगात २च जाती एक आमची बाकीचया इतर असे सकुचीत विधान देशसथ कधीच करणार नाहीत. आपुलकीने एकमेकांना मदत करणारे देशसथ माणसे जोडणयावरच भर देतात. ‘सनेहासाठी पदरमोड कर परतु जामिन राहु नको” हे अनंत फंदी या देशसथ कवीने लिहलेले वाकय सव॔ देशसथांसाठी योगय ठरावे. महणुनच वाचकहो, तुमही कोणतयाही जाती वा पोटजाती चे असा,देशसथांचया उदारपणाचा अनुभव घेणयासाठी कमीत कमी ३-४ देशसथंाशी सनेह जरूर ठेवा! जय हिंद , जय महाराषट!

Ramdas Swami (1608-1681) was a prominent Marathi saint and religious poet in the Hindu tradition in Maharashtra India. Samarth Ramdas was a great devotee of Hindu Gods Hanuman and Rama. Ramdas swami was born in a Deshastha Rugvedi Brahman family to Suryaji and Ranu Bai Thosar in Jamb in Jalna District of Maharashtra on Ram Navami, 1530 according to “Shaliwahan Shak” calendar. His given name was Narayan. He was devotee of God “Ram” and that’s why he named as Ramdas (At age 24, he named as Rāmdās.) Ramdas Swami guided Shivaji Maharaj to setup Swaraj. Ramdas swami was a gifted composer. He produced considerable lucid and effective literature in verse form in Marathi. Among his works, two compositions particularly stand out: A small book of meditations titled “Manache Shlok, which consists of 205 memorable four-line verses, and a large volume titled Dasabodh, which consists of 7,751 called as “owi”. Manāche Shlok is an advice and preaching to the human mind, to behave in an ethical way and devote oneself in the love of god. Dasabodh provides sagacious advice on both spiritual and diverse practical topics. Samartha Ramdas swami also wrote Maruti Stotra, marathi adulatory poem for Lord Hanuman.
